Carrying a Beat

I love music. No. That isn't accurate. I LOVE MUSIC! Some of my very first blog posts were just lists of what I was really into at the time. This goes back to the hype of the original iPod, but I was collecting cassettes as a kid.
I clearly remember my first CDs. The main two I loved were the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Original Soundtrack and Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby. I remember "converting" all my CDs into mp3s. I converted quite a few of my friend's CDs into my collection as well. I remember the debate on going completely "digital." I was convinced I would really miss having physical media.
I also remember putting that huge CD binder in my car and knowing I would never really need to bring the discs inside since I could just shuffle my iTunes on my laptop. I remember spending tons of money on a car dock for my iPod and dragging that heavy CD binder back in the house and tossing it in the top of the closet. I remember hating myself for that when I got a vehicle with an aux cord input.
Let's take a moment out here and remember Napster. I remember downloading digital copies of stuff I owned. I also remember replacing a TON of songs that I had lost over the years. I remember pirating a bunch of stuff. I also remember Napster disappearing. I remember Limewire. I remember Bearshare. I remember there being a lot more porn than music available from p2p servers. I remember thinking that I would rather pay for a legit CD than to pay for a digital download. I remember the first time I changed my mind on that. Thanks, Amazon.
I remember ditching the iPod for my first Android phone. Sure I missed the Apple organization and interface, but I mostly just shuffle songs anyway. I remember trying to copy my music library onto my next Android phone and having to buy a bigger micro SD card. I remember finding out that having ALL of my songs with me all of the time was stupid. I started creating the mobile playlist of my favorite songs. I remember when I ran out of authorizations on my apple purchased songs and deciding to ditch Apple Music in favor of Amazon.
The music library grew. Then it exploded. I started a new music monthly budget. I often exceeded it.
My Current iTunes Counter
During my vacation, I shortened my to-do list significantly so that I could tackle some time consuming little projects. I decided to box up all the comics I own that are not on a current publishing run. Separating the current run comics from the out of print stuff cut the comic boxes sitting around my bedroom in half. I will lose another short box worth when I put away X-men Blue, Red, and Gold soon. I also made some checklists, organized my movie collection, and cleaned out my closet (emotionally and literally). Finally, last night I worked on a project I had been avoiding. I cleaned up my digital photo collection and moved everything to my cloud service. A side effect of this horrible chore was finding my back up file for my music collection.
I was unbelievably stoked. Back in February, I lost all my music. My laptop had dumped its hard drive. I was completely bummed out. I pulled out the CD binder and ripped songs for days. I downloaded from Apple and Amazon. Still, I knew I was missing about 2000 songs. That is a TON of music to lose.
Imagine my happiness when I find my music folder stashed in a subfolder of my pictures back up. It probably wasn't the most up to date back up, but it was the same files I have been building since the digital music age began. I wasted no time merging my new collection and the old. The 7,281 song count pictured above is the result. I am missing a few things, but I cannot quantify what they are. No big deal.
The next item on my checklist is more complicated. I need to clean out and change the music on my phone. That playlist started from my favorites list on iTunes. Anything I rated 5 stars was probably worth carrying around. The problem is that my tastes change and I didn't always go adjust my star rating. I ended up with a TON of songs I was tired of hearing repeated. Also, because of copying music around in several places I ended up with 3 and 4 copies of a few songs which skewed how random my playlists really were.
Here is the MONSTER of a list that was on my phone:

My playlists really have different needs. When driving the car I need two different types of music. I need reflective tunes like Celine Dion's Ashes or Son of A Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield. I also need moving songs like Rob Zombie's Dragula or Move Bitch by Ludacris. Those are far apart headspaces.
The motorcycle and the gym are similar but not exactly the same.  I have a Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra mood on the bike. It is a very happy to be alive and free mood. I am cruising listening to Frank. The same mood fits Dolly Parton's Here You Come Again but doesn't work at all with 9 to 5. The latter gets me hype and I stop cruising and start enjoying moving faster. I lean more into curves and negotiate traffic more aggressively. Praying or Bastards by Kesha will reel me right back in.
Likewise, I can get down to 9 to 5 in the gym, but Jolene breaks my rhythm. Shut up and Dance is pretty right on. There is also TOO hard for the gym. Smack My Bitch Up is almost distracting. Dragula and More Human than Human is moving just a touch too aggressively for putting in steady rhythmic lifting. I am trying to lift slowly and keep good form not frenzy. Of course, Say Something by Great Big World can blow the entire vibe. Love the song, but all this has a place and time.

Does anyone else feel this? Is this another way I am really weird? I don't get along well with people who don't love music. I think I may be deeper into it than most, though. I am really curious how the people in my life relate to music and feelings. I think you can look through my list, besides learning I am a 14-year-old girl with a crush on Kesha and Taylor Swift, and find out a lot about what I like. Honestly, posting that list feels like baring my neck. I am normally good with vulnerability. I want people to know me if they like me or not. That is why I do this whole blog thing. It sure would be nice to get more response from it. Oh well, I am going to go build a playlist or three.
